The Children of Willesden Lane is on the recommended Holiday Reading List for the entire state of Indiana.

New Children of Willesden Lane Teaching Resources Now Available at Annenberg Media's Learner.org Web site



Annenberg Media's Learner.org Web site has created a wide-ranging series of brand new video and Web-based resources for teaching The Children of Willesden Lane. These resources are designed to complement the curriculum guide developed by the Milken Family Foundation in partnership with the nonprofit organization, Facing History and Ourselves.

The Children of Willesden Lane is now on the Summer Reading List for Intermediate and Middle School students for the entire state of Indiana. It will also be included in the updated Indiana Reading List for Level 3 (Grades 6-8).

Scranton Reads The Children of Willesden Lane

Due to the leadership of Denise Hershberger (MD '96), Queen Anne's County, Maryland approved the book and study guide for use in 8th Grade Reading, Language Arts, and Music.


Due to the leadership of science teacher Sherry Annee (IN '01), Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis, Indiana has the book as required reading for incoming freshmen.


Sarah Powley (IN '93) and Sarah Fronczek from the Indiana Department of Education are presenting a series of full-day workshops across Indiana between October 2005 and March 2006, with one segment of each workshop devoted to The Children of Willesden Lane and the companion study guide.


Thomas Kelchner (PA '01) coordinated a cross-curricular unit which culminated in a play for his entire school. Thomas and his students then presented and performed "The Children of Willesden Lane: An Interdisciplinary Experience" at the National Art Education Association Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, in March 2005. He also presented at the Pennsylvania Art Education Association Conference in State College, Pennsylvania, in October 2005.


Mona Golabek and Jane Foley delivered the opening keynote presentation at the National Media Market in Las Vegas on September 28, 2005.


The State of Idaho has added the book and study guide/CD to the state's list of recommended resources for social studies.


Sarah Powley (IN '93) presented news from The Children of Willesden Lane project at a meeting of the Indiana Milken Educator Network (IMEN) on September 11, 2004, with Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed in attendance.


Janice Smith (MA '99) has created a Web site about her Children of Willesden Lane project at http://home.earthlink.net/~jesmith/WillesdenLane.html


Cynthia Montoya (NV '90) published an article in the May 2004 issue of School Librarian's Workshop.


With the leadership of Chris Mazzino (PA '03), The Children of Willesden Lane has been chosen for Scranton Reads: One City One Book for Fall 2004, along with a district-wide pilot in Scranton middle and high schools (www.scrantonreads.org).
