A Discrepancy Survey: Seven Dimensions for Gauging Progress
by The Milken Exchange
The Seven Dimensions framework is intended to be used by the educational community, technology coordinators, policymakers and researchers as:
- a vision that will define expectations for the public investments in K-12 learning technologies;
- a self-assessment tool that assists schools, districts and states in gauging their progress toward that vision;
- a planning tool for strategizing how to incorporate technology and telecommunications into education in ways that improve student learning;
- an accountability system for tracking the return on public investments in education technology; and
- a research agenda that will help guide studies of how and under what conditions technology is an effective tool for learning.
This discrepancy model has been developed as a simple means through which schools can get a quick assessment of their current status with learning technologiesnot only where they stand across each of the Seven Dimensions, but the relative importance of each indicator to their school.
While the developers suggest that schools will require a more serious in-depth analysis through surveys, site-visits, focus groups and the tracking of student data correlated to interventions across the Seven Dimensions, this quick analysis will provide some insights into whether or not your school has in place the essential conditions necessary to utilize technology effectively as a powerful teaching and learning tool.
While educators are welcome to use this tool, it should be noted that this design is still "under construction," and it is expected to evolve as the Milken Exchange uses this model with educators.
