Use pcc as username and password to gain access to the site.

This tool, which is a companion to the Professional Competency Continuum document, has been designed to provide educators with an opportunity to assess their status within the skill and knowledge areas described in that continuum. The PCC Assessment Tool features two different assessments.

  • The General Assessment provides a quick, 20 question (25 for administrators) overview of your status within each of the areas of the continuum.
  • A Detailed Assessment can be taken in any of the 5 major areas of the continuum. This assessment will provide score for each of 4 to 6 more specific indicator areas within that major area. See the Professional Competency Continuum document for more detail regarding these skill areas. Taking the Detailed Assessment also provides the user with access to the customized advice and resources described below.

User Reports

After taking an assessment, a chart will be displayed reporting your current status in the area assessed. This status will be reported as falling into one of three categories:

Entry — The educator is aware of the possibilities that technology may hold within the area assessed, but they currently lack the training, access to technology, or opportunity to exhibit skill in this area.

Adaptation — The educators is somewhat skilled in this area, and the use technology is primarily in support of the same type of learning activities that were present before the technology arrived.

Transformation — The educator is very skilled and sometimes serves as a resource to others. Technology has become a catalyst for significant changes in the learning environment.

See the PCC document for a more complete explanation and descriptions of these levels.

Advice and Resources

After taking the detailed assessment, you will be provided with two links in each of the indicator areas assessed. These links will provide access to:

Advice — An essay describing recommendations for improvement. These recommendations are a summary of a comprehensive interview with 25 experts from around the nation describing how they would advise an educator at your skill level in this area.

Resources — A set of resources; Web sites, articles, books, etc., that are recommended by this same group of experts for use by educators at your skill level.

Using the PCC Assessment Tool

This tool can be used in three different ways:

  1. Individual users may sign on and conduct a self assessment. The General Assessment and Detailed Assessment may be taken in one session, or you may return as many times as you like to complete the assessment. Remember that the customized advice and resources can only be accessed after taking the detailed assessment.
  2. Educators who are responsible for the professional development of others may create a "project." When creating a project, the project leader designates a project name and password that is then given to students. When signing on as a project member, the student will receive the same reports, advice and resources as an individual user. The project leader can also generate reports that provide information as to status of all project members or of subgroups of that project. Individual data, however, is anonymous. The project leader can not access individual data unless provided that data by the student. Group reports can not be printed for any group numbering less than three to ensure anonymity.
  3. Educators who choose not to participate in the assessment process can simply browse the database of advice and resources. This database will be updated constantly by a team of eight editors from around the nation.
