    Dr. Jane Foley (IN '94) was once again a guest on the nationally syndicated radio show Bill Bennett's Morning in America on June 13, 2008. Dr. Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, spoke with the show's host, former U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. William J. Bennett, about Team HOPE (History Opens Eyes), a group of five Milken Educators working with Dr. Bennett to help advance the use of his books, America: The Last Best Hope, Volumes I and II, in schools across the country. The four other Milken Educators are Philip Bigler (VA '99), Rex Bolinger (IN '99), Dr. Jeff Gall (MO '96), and Mark Ingerson (VA '05). Read More

    To increase the nation's focus on high-quality teachers for every classroom in America, the Milken Family Foundation held its National Education Conference in conjunction with the 8th Annual National Teacher Advancement Program (TAP)™ Conference. The event took place March 28-30, 2008, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Culminating the conference was the Milken Educator Awards Gala, where the newest class of 75 Milken Educators each received $25,000 cash prizes.     Mat McClenahan (CA '05), a high school teacher at HighTechHigh-Los Angeles, is the March guest blogger on PBS Teachers' Media Infusion blog. In addition to outlining specific examples of how to incorporate information technology in the classroom, the blog, titled "Bridging the Achievement Gap with Media and Technology," will examine how technology-infused assignments empower students at all achievement levels to take charge of their own learning (http://www.pbs.org/teachers/mediainfusion).



    Former Secretary of Education Dr. William J. Bennett and a group of five Milken Educators—calling themselves Team HOPE (History Opens Eyes)—will host a premiere presentation for California school administrators, history teachers, postsecondary representatives, homeschool leaders and other persons of significant influence in the field of history education, on January 24, 2008 at the Milken Family Foundation.     Milken Educator Justin Minkel (AR '06) was the guest blogger for PBS Teachers Media Infusion blog (www.pbs.org/teachers/mediainfusion) for the month of December. Titled "To Triumph In This Country"/"Triunfar en este pais": Preparing English Learners for 21st Century America, Minkel's blog offers ideas for merging basic language lessons with a broader curriculum of real-world competencies and the most up-to-date technology.     Hardy Elementary School Principal Natalie Elder (TN '06), whose school participates in the Benwood Initiative in Chattanooga, Tennessee, discussed her experience with the comprehensive performance pay initiative at an event held by the Center for American Progress (CAP) on December 4, 2007, titled, "Principal Incentives: A Promising Reform?". The panel focused on how best to structure principal pay initiatives to attract high-quality candidates to high-poverty schools. Read More



    On September 10, 2007, MaryKate Hughes (DC '06) was a key witness at a House Education Committee hearing on the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, on a panel discussing teacher quality issues. The draft bill being considered by the Committee would provide significant new funding for performance pay and career ladder programs for encouraging effective teachers to teach at high-need schools. MaryKate testified about the exciting challenges offered to her by the Teacher Advancement Program (TAP)™ at DC Prep, which has helped double student proficiency in reading and triple proficiency in math.
