Biographical Information:
Tom Thompson’s ninth-grade integrated science course at Philomath High School in Philomath demystifies complex science concepts so that students can understand and use them. He immerses students in inquiry-based learning through a series of investigations, and has also developed a contextual chemistry course that teaches basic concepts in chemistry through real applications, such as the synthesis and testing of aspirin. Mr. Thompson also involves his students in community projects to monitor water quality, and he began and coaches the Electron Run Club where students design, build and race electric vehicles. Involved with science education at many levels, Mr. Thompson develops curriculum materials, conducts workshops on inquiry-based science, and advises and trains prospective science teachers. Mr. Thompson is currently a doctoral student in science education and serves as president of the Oregon Science Teachers Association.
