Eighth-grade science teacher Ulysses Gallman III enlivens his challenging curriculum at Narragansett Pier Middle School in Narragansett with humor and high energy. For example, he illustrates ionic bonding through an activity called the "Dating Game" and has students design a method for measuring power while lifting weights in his "Bench Press Technology Lab." Mr. Gallman's students use video technology to create presentations and demonstrations on science topics. They invent, design and fabricate mechanical products that address a commercial or industrial need, which they bring to school for exhibition and testing. As chair of the school's science curriculum committee, Mr. Gallman is spearheading the restructuring of the middle school science curriculum.
