Jane Ching Fung will begin her 32nd year of teaching in LA public schools this fall. She teaches in an ETK (Expanded Transitional Kindergarten) Collaboration class at Belvedere Elementary in East Los Angeles. Jane was a first grade and kindergarten for 11 years at the Alexander Science Center School in urban Los Angeles. She taught for 11 years in a multi-age class for children in pre-kindergarten through the second grade at the White House Place Primary Center, where she helped students increase their reading scores by 20 percent in just one year. An expert in standards-based instruction and a teacher leader in the field of early literacy, Fung uses multiple assessments to monitor her students' progress, matching grade-level requirements and standards with students' individual strengths to assign appropriate reading materials. In 2001, she was invited to serve on Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn's Education Commission of the States (ECS) Literacy Advisory Council, and presented at the ECS National Forum. Fung is also a teacher researcher and has published research on teacher collaboration and new teacher development. In addition to teaching primary grades from pre-kindergarten through third grade, she has taught teacher credentialing classes at the district and college level. A National Board Certified teacher, Fung was appointed in 2006 to the board of the National Commission on Teaching and American's Future (NCTAF) and served until 2014. She has also served on the board of directors of Larchmont Charter School in Los Angeles. Jane enjoys writing blogs and sharing her opinions on education and the classroom when she has time. She is a member of Accomplished Teachers of California and Center for Teaching Quality. Jane serves as a teacher advisor for BrainQuest Publication.
