Biographical Information

John E. Bormann not only teaches middle school science at H. W. Mountz School in Spring Lake, but also develops the science curriculum for the district, coordinates the annual science fair and is advisor for the eighth grade, the National Junior Honor Society and the yearbook. In 2000, and again in 2005, he received the Governor's Teacher Recognition Award from the New Jersey Department of Education. In 2003, Bormann involved his students in a Milken Festival for Youth project in which they co-authored poems and oral histories with local senior citizens. Since then this youth project has continued to thrive and is an integral part of the school's language arts program. In 2007, Bormann began work with the New Jersey Department of Education as a member of the Standards Clarification Committee for Science. He has also been designated as the lead teacher for his school, assisting with the development of a professional learning community within his district. Bormann has become actively involved with the Center for Evidence-Based Education's CAPS (Classroom Assessment Practices and Strategies) program, piloting and promoting formative assessment strategies.
