Biographical Information:

Sometimes the best way to learn is by solving a problem. And so each week, math teacher Christi Roberts gives her students a "Problem of the Week," an opportunity to apply what they've learned using multiple strategies and higher-order thinking skills as they integrate various areas of math to solve a challenging problem. Each week, the problem and solution are posted in the hallway, along with the name of the winner. The "Problem of the Week" is one of many approaches Ms. Roberts uses to bring math alive for her students. Weaving math into other subject areas is another strategy, as when her students use geometry to create stained glass windows for the medieval fair or run a business designing and selling water bottles. Striving to let no student fail, Ms. Roberts gives extra time to students needing help and works regularly with parents to help them support their children's progress. When she instituted a free tutoring program after school, the response was so overwhelming that an assistant had to be recruited. A powerful lesson in supply and demand.
