Biographical Information:
At Austin Oliver Sexton Elementary School, an urban school in Chicago with high mobility rates, fifth-grade teacher Rana Khan teaches students not to give into life's challenges but to overcome them. An impeccable planner who has looped with her students since they were third graders, Ms. Khan encourages them to become independent thinkers and makes them partners in setting goals and accepting responsibility for their learning. Under her tutelage, students have consistently shown significant growth on standardized academic exams. She has organized a popular monthly book club—open to students, teachers, and parents. Ms. Khan arranges interesting, interactive and well-organized educational field trips. She was instrumental in starting an academic club with colleagues, which students are invited to join based on their academic record and teacher recommendations. Ms. Khan works with the school's fourth- and fifth-grade cohort team, which develops, plans and organizes learning opportunities for students and professional development activities for teachers. She is a powerful example of the impact that excellent teachers can have on those around them.
