Biographical Information:
Since becoming principal of Dean Morgan Junior High School in Casper in 2001, Walt Wilcox has led the school's transformation from a traditional, adult-centered junior high school to a student-centered middle school focused on individual achievement. Nurturing a culture of collaboration and teamwork, Wilcox was instrumental in developing a highly active parent group that meets monthly with him and his staff at the school, and has sought input from students, parents, faculty and staff on how best to improve each student's educational experience. Wilcox implemented a block scheduling system that promotes collaboration and facilitates the use of research-based practices that have proven successful in the past. He was also instrumental in helping to start a program to help ninth graders transition from junior high to high school. Enrollment has remained high at Dean Morgan, achievement on the state assessment has risen, and the school has continued to make academic yearly progress (AYP). Wilcox is a leader in the Natrona County Association of School Executives (NCASE) and has completed training for Leadership Wyoming, a program dedicated to fostering leadership in the state.
