Biographical Information:
Social studies teacher John Nguyen encourages students to actively engage in their own learning at James Hillhouse High School New Haven. His rapport with his students, combined with his extensive repertoire of effective instructional strategies, has helped significantly improve student learning. As a Data Team Leader at Hillhouse, Nguyen supports student achievement by comparing results of quarterly assessments, examining strengths and weaknesses in the curriculum, and developing strategies for improvement. These strategies include a thematic essay writing program he instituted for students in the history department, aimed at helping them raise their scores on the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT). Nguyen also trained the entire social studies department in how to use data to drive instruction. A member of the school's Curriculum Team for Accreditation, Nguyen also serves on the New Haven Social Studies Curriculum Writing Committee and is a BEST Certified Portfolio Scorer, as well as a mentoring and co-operating teacher for Albertus Magnus College, Southern Connecticut State University and Yale University. Several of his students have advanced to higher education as a result of his instruction and encouragement.
