Biographical Information

Virgil Covington, principal of Winburn Middle School in Lexington, has become a district leader in reform initiatives. Under Mr. Covington's direction, the school piloted computerized attendance and grade reporting, was the first middle school in the district to be wired to the Internet, and is a member of the Kentucky TeleLinking Network, a regional telecommunications system for education. In partnership with the Lexington Parks and Recreation Department and the University of Kentucky, he initiated the Winburn Community Academy, an initiative that provides safe and positive after-school activities for neighborhood children. Mr. Covington is a former Instructional Technology Leader for Kentucky and the only building-level member of the Network Council of the Pew Network for Standards Based Reform.
