Biographical Information:

Elaine Swain, special education teacher at Richard J. Murphy Elementary School in Dorchester, is a recognized expert in using assistive technology to teach children with intensive disabilities. Using state-of-the-art adaptive technologies and innovative alternative assessment methods, she provides her students with challenging, high-quality instruction aimed at achieving state learning standards. A district Lead Teacher and a member of the school's Technology Committee and the Special Education Committee, Mrs. Swain not only shares her skills and strategies with other teachers, but offers workshops for parents as well, showing them how to use assistive technology to support their children at home. Mrs. Swain recently served as Boston's only elementary-level teacher on the State Department of Education's Alternative Assessment Committee.
