Biographical Information:

Applying his expertise as an engineer, Jay Chow, math department chairman at Waiakea High School in Hilo, is a master builder of students' futures. During one of his two years as an AP calculus teacher, Mr. Chow's students represented 25% of the top-scoring students in the state. He recently created Waiakea High's Center for Applied Mathematics (CAM), a program that integrates vocational education with the math curriculum through hands-on exploration of practical objects. Mr. Chow also helped his students apply mathematical concepts in building a portable classroom for Waiakea High School, which has helped alleviate overcrowding and saved the state nearly $100,000.
