Biographical Information

"Convinced from research that children learn most effectively through an integrated curriculum, I spearheaded an effort to blend subject areas under unifying themes," says Edward Silver, a third-grade teacher at Millington Elementary School in Millington. Mr. Silver's work in curriculum reform and in the search for learning strategies that set economically disadvantaged students on a course of excellence has helped distinguish his school program as a state model. Outside of the classroom, Mr. Silver serves on review teams for low performing schools, as well as on a K-16 council that seeks to link educational standards at all grade levels. Working together with business leaders, administrators and higher education faculty, Mr. Silver has helped identify and correct those elements that may contribute to a school's success or failure. In 1995, the Maryland Department of Education named Edward Silver Maryland Teacher of the Year.
