Dr. Rhoda Coleman is currently a researcher at the Center for Language Minority Education and Research at California State University, Long Beach. After teaching elementary school for 29 years in the Lennox School District in Los Angeles, Dr. Coleman became a reading/language arts consultant for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. Besides providing professional development to school districts, she wrote and produced 26 teacher training videos, and designed and taught online courses for reading, writing and English language development. Dr. Coleman then taught teacher credential candidates at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where she supervised student teachers and taught reading, language learning, and history and social science methods courses full time. Among other courses, she taught reading intervention in the reading certificate programs at the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Coleman was a series consultant for 2006 Harcourt Social Studies and is an active trainer for the California Reading and Literature Project at UCLA. She was California Teacher of the Year in 1995, California Council for Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 1996, and received USC's R.O.S.E. Award in 2000 in recognition of outstanding support for education.
