A new blog "More than Luck: Video Coverage of Rogelio Garcia's Notification" has been posted. Third-grade teacher Rogelio Garcia bought a lottery ticket on October 19, 2010. He didn't have the winning numbers on his ticket, but just one day later, when Governor Rick Perry and Commissioner of Education Robert Scott came to James Bonham Elementary to present him with a Milken Educator Award and a check for $25,000, he certainly felt like he did.

Ashley Kear of Dogwood Elementary in Knoxville, TN, is suprised with first 2010 Milken Educator Award
A fourth-grade teacher at Dogwood Elementary School in the Knox County school system received a $25,000 nationally recognized education award today in a surprise announcement.

Ashley Kear’s award, which is unconditional, was presented 11 a.m. during an assembly in the school gym, 705 Tipton Ave.

Among those on hand to present the award were Superintendent Jim McIntyre, Lowell Milken, chairman and cofounder of the Milken Family Foundation, and Tim Webb, Tennessee commissioner of education.

The Milken Educator Award’s reputation as the “Oscars of Teaching” was dramatically apparent today as guests entered a mystery assembly on a red carpet walkway, akin to the other celebrity-studded events recognizing movie-stars, athletes and musicians in Hollywood and New York City.
