Rhonda Burrage (MS '15) │Math teacher, Magnolia Middle School │Meridian, MS
Date of Award: January 20, 2016
Rhonda Burrage is known to be able to reach even the toughest students and get them to succeed in a school that has some significant challenges. Her algebra students received an A rating on the state test in 2013-2014, and Burrage leads the district for Algebra I scores. In the state report, 78% of her students were deemed proficient, compared with only 63% of students throughout Mississippi. Outside the classroom, Burrage is a teacher mentor for first-year teachers, serves on the school leadership team, and chairs the BETA club, where she coordinates community service projects. She spends her “free” time tutoring students enrolled in the city and county schools.
Pictured, Rhonda Burrage (MS '15) calls her mother to share the good news as Magnolia Middle School Principal Angela McQuarley (center) and Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, look on proudly. Burrage, one of four sisters, asks her mother to share the news with her sister Melody. Her mother's response: "Tell Melody? I’ll be telling everybody!"
