2017-18 Milken EducatorsPhoto 4 of 44
Jonathan Cadena, a science teacher at Desert View High School in Tucson, almost missed the assembly on January 18, 2018—he had asked his principal for the day off to take care of his infant son while his wife, also a teacher, attended a conference in Phoenix. To preserve the surprise, the principal told Jonathan he had to come in because the district superintendent had asked to meet with him.
Instead, Jonathan got the surprise of a lifetime: Arizona's 2017-18 Milken Educator Award and $25,000 (maybe the start of baby Isaac's college fund?). Jonathan, who teaches chemistry, serves as a stellar role model for the school’s predominantly Latino population, keeping college top of mind for academic students and reminding them to embrace lifelong learning. "During our classroom demonstrations, I know when I’m having fun, you’re having fun," he told students at his notification.
