Why did Brooke Powers, a math teacher at Beaumont Middle School in Lexington, win Kentucky's 2017-18 Milken Educator Award and $25,000 on January 9, 2018? She knows how to grab students' attention and motivate them to learn. Her "Math Nights" have become a favorite activity for Beaumont families, and she writes a math blog that explores the concepts she covers in class. When it's time to teach her seventh-graders about surface area, Brooke passes around an unusual visual aid: Cheetos. "It's about more than math," Brooke said after her surprise notification. "It's about learning what makes kids tick and having fun with them. ... These kids are here eight hours a day. School has to be a fun, positive place."
