2017-18 Milken EducatorsPhoto 19 of 44
On January 24, 2018, math teacher Allison Felton became Maryland's newest Milken Educator, when Mike Milken and the MEA team surprised her at Annapolis High School (AHS) with the help of Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen B. Salmon and a host of other distinguished guests. Allison works with students at both ends of the academic spectrum: She teaches both at-risk ninth-graders and AP Calculus, and all her students are flourishing.
What makes Allison's connections with her students so strong? "I tell them that I have their backs 24/7—that we're going to get through this together," Allison told a reporter after this morning's assembly. "I'm honest with them and they know I'm never going to sugarcoat anything. They respect that and trust me, and that's why they work so hard." Allison moved to Annapolis from Pittsburgh six years ago to teach at AHS and says she plans to use most of her Award money toward a house: "I'm ready to settle down. This is the place I want to grow up."
