At lunchtime, it's normal to find a pile of kids in Andria Lindsey's classroom, whether they're her students or not. Andria, who received Oregon's 2017-18 Milken Educator Award recipient on December 12, 2017, at Bend Senior High School, is known for her unparalleled ability to get students to love math—she teaches IB (International Baccalaureate) precalculus and calculus, set up the school's math lab to tutor struggling students, and pairs high school students with middle-schoolers who need math help. If you catch her looking at her phone while she watches her own children's sporting events, she's probably helping a student with a math problem via text.
“This is something you never expect to happen in your teaching career!” said Andria when we surprised her in front of the entire school. Her students and colleagues were incredibly excited for her, giving Andria a huge, long ovation. Andria is also Bend High's IB coordinator, and the program is flourishing under her care: More than 450 students at Bend High take at least one IB class, and last year 26 students graduated with full IB diplomas.
