Students and colleagues exploded with cheers and applause on January 24, 2023 when Lowell Milken named Dereka Duncan a Louisiana Milken Educator and unrolled a giant $25,000 check bearing her name. Dereka is a fifth grade science teacher at Cohn Elementary in West Baton Rouge Schools, and she's a true hometown hero, teaching in the same school she once attended. Her coworkers include some of her own elementary teachers and her sister Tereka, a Cohn paraprofessional. "I teach because I want to make a difference in my community," she told us. "The best is yet to come for Port Allen. If education makes a difference here, all other things can change, too."
