Leigh Beson loves teaching kids to read. "It's really magical when you can break down what seems like such a daunting task and teach children to crack the code," says Leigh, a Title I reading interventionist at Dighton Elementary. "But it's also about teaching them to love reading, to read with purpose, to learn something and enjoy it."
On April 5, 2023, we presented Leigh with the final Milken Educator Award of the 2022-23 season, making her the first Award recipient in the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District. The schoolwide assembly celebrated Leigh's dedication to students and focus on literacy, in a room packed with veteran Milken Educators, local media and visiting dignitaries, including Massachusetts DESE Deputy Commissioner Dr. Regina M. Robinson. After the assembly, Leigh called her husband, who teaches English at a nearby high school, to share the big news about her $25,000 surprise. "I'm very overwhelmed right now," she told him. His reply: "I am, too!"
