On February 8, 2023, as Lowell Milken talked about the West Wendover Elementary educator who was about to receive a Milken Educator Award and $25,000, Rejily Soriano was sitting in the bleachers surrounded by her students. When Lowell called her name, she thought she'd heard him wrong. It wasn't until she saw the huge $25,000 check bearing her name that she realized what was happening! Rejily started her career in education in Elko County School District’s “Grow Your Own” teacher recruitment program, working with preschool students in the Head Start program before moving up to kindergarten. "I couldn't be the teacher I am without people believing in me," she told the assembly through tears.
