Third grade teacher Diana Lopez came to work on February 10, 2023, with no idea that the assembly at BASIS San Antonio Primary Medical Center would change her life. When we called Diana's name as the recipient of a $25,000 Texas Milken Educator Award, "it was a complete out-of-body experience," she says. Fighting back tears, Diana made her way to the front of the room: "All I could hear were the students chanting my name. LO-PEZ! LO-PEZ!"
Helping students grow is Diana's number one priority and reward: "When I see my students achieve, I truly feel like I'm making a difference." She appreciates the public recognition of the Milken Award. "This is the kind of thing that keeps teachers in the classroom," she says. "When you're surrounded by children all day, there aren't a lot of adults coming up to you and saying 'Great job!' "
