Emily Caldarelli (RI '16) | Fourth-grade teacher, Paul Cuffee Lower School | Providence, RI
Date of Award: October 18, 2016
Emily Caldarelli is known as a "master facilitator" who teaches students to advocate for themselves and voice their opinions. She gathers children who wear glasses for special lunches and meets with fourth-grade girls to talk about non-academic issues on their minds. "I like to know their lives outside of the classroom," Emily told the Providence Journal after her surprise notification. Emily observes her students particularly carefully in the first moments of each day to figure out who overslept, quarreled with a sibling or left their homework on the kitchen table. "If they've had a rough start to their day, they know that I'm there if they need to chat," she says.
