Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes

The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes works with students and educators across diverse academic disciplines to develop history projects that highlight role models who demonstrate courage, compassion and respect. Through a unique project-based learning approach, students discover, develop and communicate the stories of Unsung Heroes who have made a profound and positive impact on the course of history. By championing these Unsung Heroes, students, educators and communities discover their own power and responsibility to effect positive change in the world.

Celebrating Unsung Heroes through Student Art

LMC has named 20 winners in the 9th annual ARTEFFECT Competition. The international competition invited students in grades 6-12 to explore and champion the stories of LMC Unsung Heroes—individuals who took heroic actions that made a positive and profound impact on the course of history. In 2023, LMC announced its inaugural cohort of ARTEFFECT Ambassadors, a prestigious online fellowship for educators working directly with K-12 students to foster the visual arts. The 28 individuals in the first ARTEFFECT Ambassadors cohort hail from diverse educational, professional, and geographic backgrounds and specialize in areas including visual arts, social studies, general education, special education, and nonprofits.
